As the 1960s progressed, the buyers of the Dr Martens products, originally exclusively working-class men, began to change. Probably the first public figure to wear Dr Martens was Tony Benn, socialist MP and champion of leftist issues. He could sometimes be seen at CND marches in a cloth button-down shirt, grey suit and black 1461 shoes.
