Dr Martens boots were first created over 50 years ago, a half century that has seen Britain transformed, as musical movements have emerged and declined, and fashions have come and gone. Yet Dr Martens have been the footwear of choice from everyone from punks to policemen, skinheads to socialists.
Dr Martens have left a hefty footprint on style, music and politics. Which would probably have surprised Klaus Martens, the young German army doctor who created the original design. Fifty years on, the enduring appeal of Dr Martens is that, despite all the success, the brand remains unshakeably cool.
The Dr Martens SS15 range is heavily influenced by the scenes of the early 80's. Inspired by punks and musicians, the ranges are stylistically hardcore mixed with edges of punk with a few elements of surfer imagery.
Once again the Dr Martens designers have been inspired to create both authentic versions of the originals styles, as well as modern takes on footwear worn in the early 80's. Here's a few of my favourite styles :
Where others have followed, Dr Martens originated. In the fifty years since Dr Martens was created, the core principles of the brand have remained the same. The hands on craftsmanship of the Vintage (Made in England) premium range reflects the adherence to their proud, highly skilled workmanship.
This Range is Dr Marten's pinnacle, manufactured at the Northampton factory using decades old techniques. The attention to detail is exquisite on these Shoes and Boots. Using high quality Packard and Rub Off leathers, topped off with neat touches such as premium heel loops and swing tabs.
Drenched in history yet updated with modern flourishes, this is pure Dr Martens, drawing on history, blended with modernity.
New for SS15, the Daytona is lightweight and comfortable, crafted from durable Canvas with a lush Hawaiian Floral print. The grooved air cushioned sole and logo heel tab gives it Dr Martens signature style.
Built on a slim, pointed last drawn from Dr Martens archives, this lithe monk-strap shoe is an instant icon.
Dr Martens have crafted it in the signature smooth leather, with a glossy polish that cuts a new twist on this old favourite. Yellow stitching at the welt adds a bit of irreverence to the classic style.
The 1460 8-Eye boot has been a counter-culture classic since it first came out in 1960.
Inspired by the iconology and styling of US Hardcore bands and their fans, Dr Martens have wrapped this iconic style in Japanese-influenced tattoo art - including koi fish, cherry blossoms, peacocks and clouds (plus a red 1460 hidden away in the pattern).
The intricate design is printed in muted tones on tan full grain leather, set off by a strong-and-simple black welt and grooved sole.
